Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome! Here you’ll find answers about my translation, tutoring, and Dutch coaching services. With over 25 years of professional experience, published books on language and culture—including KulturSchock Niederlande—and nearly 25 years of living as a Dutch-born “repat” among internationals, I combine linguistic expertise with practical, real-world insight.

Whether you’re seeking professional German translations, personalized tutoring, or Dutch language and cultural coaching, these FAQs will help you understand how my services work and why they are tailored to your needs.

How much does a professional translation cost?

Rates for German translations depend on the subject matter, word count, and file format (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, InDesign, XLIFF, or website tools such as WPML or Weblate). Prices start at €0.08 per word.

As a freelancer, I keep pricing transparent and fair: you pay only for the translation itself—without the overhead or hidden fees that large agencies often charge for project management or office costs. This ensures professional, accurate work at a competitive rate.

I also offer editing of existing German texts and post-editing of machine translations, starting from €0.05 per word, ensuring accuracy, fluency, and cultural relevance.

How do German tutoring lessons work?

All German tutoring takes place in person in Eindhoven, never online. Language learning is most effective when practiced directly in real-life situations—not only in front of a screen.

Lessons are fully tailored to your level and goals. For high school students, this may mean extra support with grammar, vocabulary, and exam preparation. For university students and professionals preparing to study or work in Germany, the emphasis is on practical communication skills and cultural understanding.

As the author of several language-learning and culture guides, including German Slang and KulturSchock Niederlande, I design lessons that are practical, motivating, and culturally insightful.

The cost is €18 per hour, including preparation of personalized lesson materials. An intake session is free when you sign up for at least 10 lessons; otherwise, the intake is billed at the same hourly rate.

Hoe werkt privéles Duits?

Alle lessen vinden persoonlijk in Eindhoven plaats, nooit online.

What does Dutch coaching and cultural guidance include?

All coaching and guidance takes place in person in Eindhoven—never online. Language is learned most effectively when practiced in daily situations with direct, personal support.

My Dutch coaching is based on one-to-one conversation lessons, fully tailored to your level, pace, and daily needs. Instead of standard classroom methods, you practice Dutch as you actually need it: talking with colleagues, meeting neighbors, supporting your children at school, or handling everyday situations such as shopping, cycling, or visiting the doctor.

The cultural guidance complements this by giving you practical insights into Dutch society. As the author of KulturSchock Niederlande—written for German-speaking audiences—and as a Dutch-born “repat” who has lived among expats for nearly 25 years, I know both the Dutch system and the questions newcomers typically have. This unique perspective allows me to explain not only how things work, but also why.

The cost is €18 per hour, including preparation of personalized materials. An intake session is free when you sign up for at least 10 lessons; otherwise, the intake is billed at the same hourly rate.

How do I request a quote or schedule a lesson?

Getting started is simple:

  • Translations → Send me your document (Word, PDF, Excel, PowerPoint, or other formats), and I’ll provide a tailored quote with a clear deadline.

  • Tutoring or coaching → Contact me to book an intake session (free if you continue with at least 10 lessons). During this session, we’ll discuss your goals, level, and preferred schedule.

What makes my services different from other translators or tutors?

With over 20 years of professional experience as a translator, author, and tutor, I combine linguistic expertise with a flexible, personal approach. As a freelancer, I keep communication direct and efficient—no agency overhead, no hidden fees.

For translations, I use the latest tools, including AI-assisted precision, but every text is always polished by hand for accuracy, tone, and cultural fit.

For tutoring and coaching, lessons are fully customized to your level, goals, and daily needs—making them practical, motivating, and effective for students, professionals, and expats in Eindhoven.

Can lessons be conducted online or only in Eindhoven?

All tutoring and coaching sessions take place in person in Eindhoven. I don’t offer online lessons, because learning is most effective when practiced in real environments and through direct interaction.

Depending on your goals, lessons can take place at home, at work, or even out in the city. I often accompany clients into real settings such as shops, schools, or public services, so you can immediately practice Dutch or German in the situations where you’ll actually need it.

How come you offer services in three languages?

I work in Dutch, German, and English because these languages reflect both my professional expertise and my personal background.

I was born in the Netherlands, raised mainly in Germany by a Belgian mother, and have lived in the US, China, and Australia. This multilingual, multicultural path has made English my “third mother tongue” alongside Dutch and German.

As an author, I have published several language and culture books, including German Slang, Englisch für Australien, and KulturSchock Niederlande. These works show not only my linguistic skill but also my ability to explain cultural quirks and everyday communication in a clear and engaging way.

This combination of deep research, translation expertise, and lived experience allows me to design lessons and coaching sessions that go beyond grammar—helping you gain confidence and cultural understanding in the contexts that matter most.

How long does a translation or tutoring process take?

  • Translations → Turnaround time depends on word count and complexity. Short documents can often be delivered within 24–48 hours. Larger projects will be scheduled with a clear deadline upfront.

  • Tutoring/Coaching → Progress depends on your starting level, goals, and pace. Many clients see noticeable improvement after just a few lessons, while steady, long-term growth comes with regular practice.
